To be precise, this type of socket is called 5-core or 3P+N+E industrial socket in the industry. If you want to make a perfect replacement, you’ll need to take a digital vernier caliper and record three key physical dimensions in millimeters (mm): the mounting hole distance (the distance from the center of the screw hole to the center), the flange size (the peripheral length and width of the mounting panel), and the panel opening size (the diameter of the mounting hole).
Of course, physical size alignment is only the first step. You must also check the electrical parameters printed on the socket housing to ensure that the current (such as the common 63A or 125A), voltage level (usually 380V-415V three-phase electricity is marked in red) and protection level (IP44 or IP67) are exactly the same as your original IEC 60309 standard heavy-duty connector. This is not only related to whether the machine can run normally, but also to ensure absolute safety in the industrial environment.

To make 5-core (3P+N+E) industrial sockets, precision is life. A few millimeters short of zero, the socket might just die and the piston wouldn’t fit into the existing machine panel. We must get used to using millimeter (mm) readings throughout, and avoid converting inches to ensure standard industrial accuracy.
This is probably the worst size panel mount type socket can have. You have to measure the distance between the mounting screw holes.
The flange is actually the outer rectangular or square plastic border of the socket against the mounting panel.

The open hole size refers to the large round hole on the machine panel that is used to plug into the socket body.
The physical size match only won half. The 5-hole socket must also be fully compatible at the electrical level, otherwise it is tantamount to laying a time bomb on site. You have to keep an eye on the data printed directly on the socket housing to match the following metrics:
Industrial sockets carry large loads. Generally, the rated current such as 63A or 125A is engraved on the side of the socket. When replacing the socket, the current must be exactly the same, which is not negotiable. At worst, equipment strikes may occur, while at worst, overheating may even cause electrical fires.
Under the IEC 60309 standard, voltage levels are generally used in the world with a specific color code, which can be clearly distinguished by the eye. This design is quite clever.
If it is a standard 5-hole socket (3P+N+E) that handles 380V-415V three-phase electricity, the housing or flip cover is definitely red.
Always make sure that the voltage level printed on the housing is completely aligned with the power supply of the machine in your factory.
The IP rating determines the socket’s ability to withstand dust and water in harsh industrial environments.
Note: When replacing a device, the IP level of the old socket must be followed by the level of the new socket. Do not destroy the original environmental safety standards of the device to save trouble.
Ultimately, figuring out how to measure a 5-hole socket is essentially about finding a perfect replacement that meets the global IEC 60309 standard. Use digital vernier calipers to cut through the installation hole distance, flange and opening size, and then strictly control the electrical parameters of 3P+N+E (rated current, red 380V-415V voltage mark and IP44/IP67 protection level). If you do this, the replacement work will be basically foolproof.
Only by strictly following these precise steps on site can you ensure that the newly replaced heavy-duty connector is seamlessly connected to the existing machinery and equipment, and provide undiminished safety guarantees for the entire industrial operation.
